Interested in PR? These 10 things can help you learn more!

  1.   Do you know what public relations is? If not that is the first thing you should look at before going into public relations.
  2.   Know exactally what Public Relations is and what it will mean to you.
  3.  Get a degree.  No, you don’t need a BA in public relations to be successful in the field.  One of the most important things I have learned is that it takes a variety of skills to be successful.  Gain as much experience you can in everything you find interesting.  You never know what could happen or what circumstances you will have to work with that day in a career in PR.
  4.   Finding out what qualities can help make you successful in PR.  A blog by Kellen McKillop give us her own personal advice on what it takes to make it in PR based on Public Relations professional Valerie Shaindlin.  Emotional intelligence is a must have, PR is not a place for introverts.  Valerie offers advice for students pursuing PR. These 5 areas are what she find important and are worth evaluating yourself: helpful skills, education, education, experience, practicing communication skills.   Another piece of advice is to figure out the area of public relations you want to be in.
  5.  Explore who you are in College.  We all need a little advice every once in a while, especially while in college.  Jeremy Porter offers not only advice for what students should try to do while in school.  But he also offers advice on how to narrow down exactly what you might be most interested in.
  6. Don’t be scared to ask for advice.  If a certain career or area makes you want to learn more go for it! There are many sites that offer advice on what it takes to make it in any career out there.

9. Know you surroundings.  Know whats going on in your community, the country you live in, and around the world.  The more you know the more you have to offer.

10. Research, Research, Research!!  And make sure you enjoy what you are doing!
